Still Need Form 8949 and Schedule D—Even With Form 1099-DA
Form 1099-DA reports digital-asset proceeds to you and the IRS—it does not replace Form 8949 boxes G–L or Schedule D. Reconcile basis, holding period, and exceptions before you file.

Bottom line in one breath
If your exchange or broker issued Form 1099-DA for digital-asset dispositions, that form is an information return—not your capital-gain computation. For tax year 2025 (and the same structure going forward), the IRS Instructions for Form 8949 tell you to use boxes G, H, or I (short-term) and J, K, or L (long-term) for digital assets, then roll totals to Schedule D. Cary/RTP investors still need compliance planning around proceeds, basis, holding period, and adjustments—receiving 1099-DA does not mean “skip 8949/Sch D.”
Background
Form 8949 exists so you and the IRS can reconcile sales reported on Forms 1099-B, 1099-DA, or 1099-S with what you report on the return. You generally complete Form 8949 before filling Schedule D lines that pull from those categories. The 2025 Form 8949 instructions added dedicated digital-asset checkboxes and warn: do not report digital-asset trades in boxes C or F (those remain for certain non–digital-asset “no 1099” items). Broker-reporting rules for who must issue 1099-DA are covered in our companion article on Form 1099-DA—this piece focuses only on the 8949 → Schedule D workflow.
Old vs. new
1. Old habit: Treat a brokerage 1099 like “the tax already figured.”
2. With 1099-DA: Report proceeds from the form in column (d); fix basis/holding-period issues with columns (e)/(f)/(g) as required.
3. Short-term digital assets: Box G (basis reported to IRS), H (basis not reported), I (no 1099-DA/1099-B)—not box C.
4. Long-term digital assets: Box J / K / L respectively—not box F.
5. Exception 1 (narrow): If every 1099-DA shows basis reported to the IRS, no listed adjustments, Ordinary box not checked, you need no corrections, and no QOF deferral—you may summarize on Schedule D lines 1a/8a without Form 8949. Many 2025 statements will not meet this bar (待核 per statement).
6. Covered vs noncovered: Instructions discuss covered digital assets generally as acquired after 2025 in custodial accounts—earlier lots often remain noncovered with DIY basis.
7. Flow: Form 8949 totals → Schedule D net ST/LT → Form 1040 capital-gain line; answer the Form 1040 digital-asset question consistently.
Self-check: does this affect you?
1. You received one or more Forms 1099-DA (or substitute statements) for 2025 dispositions.
2. Your PDF shows proceeds but blank/missing basis, or basis “not reported to IRS.”
3. You traded across multiple platforms, wallets, or self-custody (some disposals with no 1099-DA → box I/L).
4. You need to adjust for fees, incorrect basis, wash-sale codes, or holding-period corrections.
5. You assumed importing 1099-DA into software “finishes” Schedule D without reviewing boxes G–L.
Simplified example (illustration only; ignores fees and wash-sale detail)
Ms. Zhang sold Bitcoin twice in 2025:
1. Sale A: Custodial exchange issues 1099-DA with proceeds, basis not reported to IRS, held 8 months → Form 8949 Part I, box H; enter proceeds; enter her cost basis; gain/loss to Schedule D line 2 area.
2. Sale B: Self-custody disposal, no 1099-DA, held 18 months → Part II, box L; she must supply dates, proceeds, and basis from her own records.
3. Wrong path: Entering only the 1099-DA “total proceeds” as ordinary income on Form 1040—or skipping Schedule D—mismatches IRS information-reporting and can trigger notices.
Action timeline
1. Gather: All 1099-DA/substitutes, exchange CSV exports, wallet histories, prior-year loss carryovers.
2. Classify: Short vs long; G/H/I vs J/K/L; flag Exception 1 candidates (rare if basis missing).
3. Reconcile: Column (d) to form proceeds; correct basis with code B when required; document adjustments.
4. Post: Form 8949 → Schedule D → Form 1040; keep workpapers with the e-file.
5. State: Prepare NC (and other states) consistently with federal capital-gain figures (待核 any state tweak).
What YCL can do
1. 1099-DA → Form 8949 box mapping and Exception 1 eligibility review.
2. Basis reconstruction for noncovered / transferred-in lots (workpaper standard).
3. Multi-platform merge (exchange + self-custody) before Schedule D.
4. Coordination with the broader Form 1099-DA broker-reporting companion article.
