Direct File in North Carolina: Federal–State Bridge Suspended for 2026 Season
IRS Direct File—and its North Carolina state bridge—was available in the 2025 filing season but suspended for 2026. NC filers should plan separate federal Free File / software and NCDOR-approved eFile paths.

Bottom line in one breath
If you are a North Carolina taxpayer who planned to use IRS Direct File for a one-stop federal + NC return, update your compliance planning: NCDOR states Direct File was available for the 2025 filing season with a state bridge, but the IRS suspended the program and it will not be available for the 2026 filing season. Cary/RTP filers should budget time for a federal channel (Free File / software / preparer) and a separate NCDOR-approved state eFile path—do not assume the bridge returns without an official relaunch (待核 for future seasons).
Background
Direct File was the IRS’s free, guided online tool for eligible individuals. In the 2025 filing season, North Carolina participated so eligible residents could complete federal filing and connect to a state filing experience. For the 2026 filing season (generally tax year 2025 returns), the IRS did not operate Direct File; NCDOR’s Direct File page explicitly says the program was suspended and is unavailable. IRS communications for the 2026 season instead highlight IRS Free File partners, Free File Fillable Forms, and MilTax for eligible military communities.
Old vs. new
1. 2025 filing season: Direct File available to eligible NC taxpayers with a federal–state bridge.
2. 2026 filing season: Direct File suspended—no IRS Direct File, no NC bridge through that tool.
3. Federal free path now: IRS Free File (partner AGI limits; TY2025 season cited AGI ≤ $89,000—confirm current season 待核) or Free File Fillable Forms (any income, DIY forms).
4. NC state path: NC Free File links from NCDOR, or other NCDOR-approved eFile products; file state with or after federal.
5. Prior Direct File users: Federal return summary via IRS Online Account; NC return access referenced via FileYourStateTaxes (per NCDOR)—retrieve copies before you need them.
6. Season open dates: NCDOR accepted TY2025 returns beginning January 26, 2026; calendar-year D-400 due April 15, 2026 (pattern repeats annually).
7. Future seasons: No public relaunch date as of September 19, 2026—treat Direct File as unavailable until IRS/NCDOR announce otherwise (待核).
Self-check: does this affect you?
1. You used Direct File last year and expected the same NC bridge this season.
2. You only budgeted time for “one website” and have not picked an NC eFile product.
3. Your AGI may qualify for IRS Free File / NC Free File—but partner rules differ.
4. You need bilingual help assembling W-2/1099 packages for software or a CPA.
5. You keep Cary/RTP and Shanghai records and need clear federal vs. state acknowledgement IDs.
Simplified example (illustration only)
Mr. Chen in RTP filed TY2024 via Direct File with NC bridge in spring 2025:
1. Spring 2026 (TY2025): Direct File unavailable → he uses an IRS Free File partner for federal and a separate NCDOR Free File / eFile product for Form D-400.
2. Documents: He downloads last year’s Direct File federal summary from IRS Online Account and confirms NC copy access via the path NCDOR publishes.
3. Compliance takeaway: Two acknowledgements (federal + state), two payment confirmations if he owes—bridge absence means more checklist items, not “no filing.”
Action timeline
1. Now: Do not wait for Direct File; choose federal + NC channels and bookmark NCDOR eFile pages.
2. When forms arrive: Complete federal first (NC often needs federal figures), then state.
3. If you used Direct File before: Export/save prior-year PDFs and AGI figures for identity/PIN workflows.
4. Payment: Federal via IRS Direct Pay / Online Account; NC via NCDOR pay options—never mix confirmation numbers.
5. Before April 15: Confirm both returns accepted; if extending, remember extension-to-file ≠ extension-to-pay (see April 15 checklist sibling).
What YCL can do
1. Channel selection: Free File eligibility screen vs. paid software vs. full CPA prep.
2. Federal + North Carolina e-file package with bilingual document intake.
3. Prior-year AGI / transcript retrieval coaching when Direct File history is incomplete.
4. Balance-due payment mapping (IRS vs. NCDOR).

FAQ
Q: Can I still file NC for free somehow?
A: Possibly via NC Free File or other NCDOR-listed options if you meet that provider’s rules. That is separate from IRS Direct File. Check NCDOR’s current Free File links each season.
Q: Will Direct File come back next year?
A: As of September 19, 2026, NCDOR states it is unavailable for the 2026 season and IRS has not announced a relaunch date. Treat any comeback as 待核 until official notice.
Q: I only have a federal Free File return—does NC file automatically?
A: No. Without the Direct File bridge, you must submit a North Carolina return through an approved state channel (or paper, if you choose).
