Need proof you are federal-tax compliant for a loan, a job, or a benefit application? On September 16, 2026, the Taxpayer Advocate Service reminded the public that the IRS offers a digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report through your Individual Online Account. IRS news release IR-2026-97 (August 20, 2026) launched the tool. For Cary, RTP, Raleigh, and Wake County taxpayers, this is a practical federal document—not a full tax-return copy.

What the report shows — and what it leaves out

The Tax Compliance Report confirms whether you filed and paid on time. It generally shows compliance status (Compliant, Noncompliant, or Compliance issue), filing history, and whether you owe federal tax. It does not show income, filing status, or dependents.

What “Compliance issue” often means

A Compliance issue status can include situations such as an installment agreement in progress, late-filing or late-payment history, a civil fraud penalty that was assessed (even if paid), or tax under administrative or judicial review. Treat it as a signal to check your account details—not as an automatic loan denial.

How to download it (four steps)

1. Sign in to or create an IRS Individual Online Account (identity verification such as ID.me is usually required once).

2. Open the Records and status tab.

3. Choose Tax records.

4. Select Get Tax Compliance Report and download the PDF.

Share only the original PDF

Screenshots, scans, and browser “Print to PDF” copies lose the digital certificate. Send the original file downloaded from your account. Some mobile readers may not display the certificate banner; that does not mean the file is unauthenticated—open it in desktop Adobe Reader if you need to see the certification.

Fresh filings and payments may lag

Payments often appear in about two weeks. Returns often post in about four to six weeks. Download early before a document deadline, and recheck the account if the status looks stale.
