Bottom line in one breath

Many still cite Rev. Proc. 2024-40 / IR-2024-273 TY 2025 figures: $15,000 single/MFS, $30,000 joint, $22,500 HOH. OBBBA then raised TY 2025 amounts; IRS IR-2025-103 lists $15,750 single/MFS, $31,500 joint, $23,625 HOH. TY 2026: $16,100 / $32,200 / $24,150. North Carolina’s standard deduction is set by the General Assembly and does not rise automatically with the federal figure (NCDOR FAQ Q15). Use verified current dollars for compliance planning.

Background

In fall 2024, IR-2024-273 / Rev. Proc. 2024-40 published inflation-adjusted 2025 standard deductions—the widely shared “$15k / $30k” baseline. OBBBA increased the standard deduction; IRS IR-2025-103 (Oct. 9, 2025) tabulated TY 2025 under OBBB and TY 2026 under OBBB. NC is a static-conformity state; its standard deduction lives in G.S. §105-153.5(a)(1).

Old vs. new

1. RP 2024-40 (pre-legislation inflation table) 2025: Single/MFS $15,000; MFJ $30,000; HOH $22,500.

2. Post-OBBB 2025 (IR-2025-103): Single/MFS $15,750; MFJ $31,500; HOH $23,625.

3. 2026 (IR-2025-103): Single/MFS $16,100; MFJ $32,200; HOH $24,150.

4. Aged/blind add-ons (RP 2024-40): $1,600 (married/SS); $2,000 if unmarried and not SS — post-OBBB continuity 待核 on Form 1040 instructions.

5. Dependent limit (RP 2024-40): greater of $1,350 or $450 + earned income — 待核 after OBBB.

6. North Carolina: Federal increase ≠ NC standard deduction increase (NCDOR Q15: No).

7. Planning: Most filers take the standard deduction; high property-tax / mortgage households still compare Schedule A and NC itemizing (often a combined $20,000 mortgage + real-estate-tax cap—separate insight).

Self-check: does this affect you?

1. Your 2025 estimate still uses $15,000 / $30,000.

2. You compare federal standard vs itemized (including the higher SALT cap).

3. You assumed NC would match the federal hike.

4. Someone in the household is 65+ (age add-on vs OBBB senior deduction—different rules).

5. Dual-income Cary/RTP households choosing MFJ vs MFS.

Simplified example (illustration only)

Wake County MFJ couple with no large itemized deductions:

1. Old baseline estimate might use $30,000.

2. Under IR-2025-103, TY 2025 joint framework is $31,500.

3. TY 2026 joint framework is about $32,200.

4. NC still uses state-set standard or itemized rules—not an automatic $31,500.

Action timeline

1. TY 2025 estimates: Prefer OBBB figures $15,750 / $31,500 / $23,625 (confirm on final instructions—待核).

2. TY 2026: Use $16,100 / $32,200 / $24,150.

3. Each year: Run federal and NC standard-vs-itemized tests separately.

4. Source of truth: Form 1040 instructions + NCDOR D-400 instructions.

5. RSU households: Standard deduction lowers taxable income; it does not replace vest-year withholding planning.
