Bottom line
If you run a restaurant, nail salon, spa, studio, or retail store in Cary / RTP / Raleigh, you answer to five agencies—the IRS, NCDOR, NC DES, the NC Secretary of State, and your county tax office—and missing any one date can trigger a penalty letter. This calendar lays out the 2026 tax year deadlines on the 2027 calendar: January 31, 2027 is a Sunday, so W-2s, 1099-NECs, Form 940, the fourth-quarter Form 941, NC-3, and county property listings roll to Monday, February 1, 2027; Forms 1120-S / 1065 are due March 15, 2027; and Form 1040 (with Schedule C), NC D-400, CD-401S, D-403, and LLC annual reports are due April 15, 2027 (all subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance). Each item also shows the underlying rule so you can reuse it every year. The nearest deadline is November 2, 2026: third-quarter Form 941 and NC quarterly filings (October 31 is a Saturday, so it rolls; subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance). This article is compliance planning and education only. All amounts, rates, and thresholds are subject to current IRS/NCDOR guidance, and it does not promise an outcome.
Background
Under federal law, a deadline falling on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday moves to the next business day; NCDOR applies the same rule to state taxes, and G.S. 105-395.1 does the same for county property tax. The IRS publishes Publication 509 (Tax Calendars) each year with employer and business dates. Federal payroll deposit schedules (monthly or semiweekly) depend on the Form 941 lookback period, while NC-5 filers are assigned quarterly, monthly, or semiweekly status by average monthly withholding (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
Two 2026 changes affect the calendar. First, in IR-2026-99 (August 24, 2026) the IRS reminded filers that the FIRE system stops accepting information returns at 3 p.m. ET on November 19, 2026, so 2026 tax year 1099s filed in the 2027 season must go through IRIS. Second, the OBBBA raised the Form 1099-NEC / most 1099-MISC reporting threshold to $2,000 for payments made starting in 2026 (subject to current IRS/NCDOR guidance). In IR-2026-105 (September 4, 2026, National Payroll Week), the IRS also reminded employers to deposit and file payroll taxes on time and keep payroll records at least four years. In North Carolina, Mecklenburg County added a 1% local sales tax effective July 1, 2026, so county rate changes belong on your calendar and in your POS settings too (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).

Self-check: are you affected?
1. Restaurant or nail salon with W-2 staff — Form 941, NC-5, DES quarterly reports, and year-start W-2 / NC-3 / 940 are all on your calendar.
2. You paid a renovation, cleaning, or design contractor more than $2,000 — Furnish 1099-NEC by February 1, 2027 and collect W-9s in advance (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
3. You elected S corporation status — The March 15, 2027 Form 1120-S comes a month before personal returns, so K-1s must be ready first; see 1120-S / 1065 K-1 e-filing (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
4. Sole proprietor or single-member LLC with steady profit — You likely owe quarterly estimates; see quarterly estimated tax dates.
5. Retail or food business registered for NC sales tax — File E-500 on the monthly or quarterly schedule NCDOR assigns, including zero returns.
6. Your shop has equipment, furniture, POS hardware, or leasehold improvements — List business personal property with your county in January 2027.
7. Your LLC or corporation is registered with the NC Secretary of State — Missing the annual report around April 15 can lead to administrative dissolution.
Simplified example (illustrative only)
Example — Cary bubble-tea shop (S corporation, five employees, monthly sales tax filer)
Assume Ms. Lin’s shop opened in January 2026, has five employees, paid a renovation contractor $12,000, and was assigned monthly sales tax and monthly NC-5 filing by NCDOR (figures are illustrative only).
- January–February 2027: Pay the fourth personal estimate on January 15, 2027; file December 2026 sales tax by January 20, 2027; by February 1, 2027, complete W-2 / W-3, the 1099-NEC ($12,000 contractor), Form 940, Q4 Form 941, and NC-3, and list shop equipment with Wake County (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
- March–April 2027: File Form 1120-S and issue K-1s by March 15, 2027; by April 15, 2027 file Form 1040, NC D-400, and CD-401S, and submit the LLC annual report to the Secretary of State ($200 paper / $203 online) (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
- Year-round routine: NC-5 by the 15th and E-500 by the 20th each month, plus quarterly Form 941 and DES reports, rolling forward on weekends.
These dates and dollars do not calculate any real case; actual filing frequencies follow IRS, NCDOR, and DES assignment notices, and all dates are subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance. This article does not promise any filing or penalty outcome.
Action plan and timeline
1. October 2026: Confirm the filing-frequency notices from NCDOR, DES, and the IRS, and load these dates into a shared calendar with seven-day reminders.
2. By November 2, 2026: File third-quarter Form 941, NC quarterly NC-5 / E-500, and the DES quarterly report (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
3. By November 19, 2026: If you still rely on FIRE, finish your IRIS application; collect all contractor W-9s by December 31, 2026 (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
4. December 2026: Use January–November books for year-end planning on S corporation owner pay, retirement contributions, and equipment purchase timing.
5. January 4 through February 1, 2027: Complete W-2s, 1099s, Forms 940 / 941, NC-3, and the county property listing; request any county listing extension by February 1, 2027 (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
6. March 15 and April 15, 2027: File business and personal returns; if you cannot finish, file extensions and pay estimated tax due (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
7. Early in the month after each quarter-end (for example, by January 8, 2027): Reconcile with your bookkeeper so quarterly reports agree with each other; when unsure, book a YCL Free Consultation (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).

FAQ
Q: If a deadline falls on a weekend, does it always roll forward?
A: Federal, NC state, and county property tax deadlines generally move to the next business day (county property tax under G.S. 105-395.1), but electronic payment systems may require initiation a business day early, so finish at least two business days ahead (subject to current IRS/NCDOR/county tax office guidance).
Q: If I extend my return, can I pay later too?
A: No. Form 7004, Form 4868, and NC extensions extend only the time to file; tax is still due by the original deadline, or penalties and interest may apply.
Q: With no sales, do I still file sales tax and Form 941?
A: Generally yes. A registered sales tax account must file E-500 even with zero sales, and an employer files Form 941 for quarters with employees; if you close or stop hiring, notify the agencies or close the accounts.
