1099 Filing for Contractors
Collect W-9s, issue 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC, file them with the IRS and states, and keep the backup withholding rules straight.
What is included
- W-9 collection and TIN checks
- 1099-NEC for nonemployee compensation and 1099-MISC for rent and other payments
- E-filing with the IRS and participating states
- Copies to recipients
- Corrections and late-filing clean-up
Deadline
Form 1099-NEC is due to both the contractor and the IRS by January 31. Paying contractors through a card or a platform such as PayPal usually shifts reporting to the platform (Form 1099-K) instead.
Common questions
Do I need a W-9 before paying?
It is best practice: without a valid TIN you may be required to withhold tax from the payment.
