Sales & Use Tax
Registration, monthly or quarterly sales tax returns, marketplace and economic nexus questions, and use tax on purchases — for restaurants, retailers and online sellers.
What is included
- Sales tax registration in each state where you have nexus
- Monthly or quarterly returns (North Carolina E-500); annual where another state allows it
- Reconciliation with POS and marketplace reports
- Use tax on untaxed purchases
- Responses to sales tax notices and audits
Economic nexus
Since 2018 states can require out-of-state sellers to collect sales tax once sales into the state pass a threshold, even without a physical presence. Marketplaces such as Amazon usually collect for their sellers, but not always for every channel.
Common questions
How often do I file?
The state assigns a frequency based on how much tax you collect. In North Carolina the E-500 is filed monthly or quarterly — there is no annual option. Some other states also allow annual returns.
